THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN AFGHANISTAN AND ‘STILL A REALITY’ IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE
A news the last few hours is that a girl of 22 years was strangled by her husband because she has given birth to a baby girl, the third of three daughters. We are north of Kabul in a village in Kunduz province. The murderer took refuge in the house of a local chief whose protection makes it untouchable. Even for the police.
I could not not mention this yet another terrible episode of violence against women. More often than women who are denied not only freedom but the real existence. There are countries in the world where everyday someone is allowed to violate human rights, women in particular. In Afghanistan, in this case, 70% of women suffer violence at home and in 25% of these cases of sexual abuse.
They are disturbing data on which my opinion is not just remain silent. That the media should have more attention for these terrible crimes defined by the same Islamic community. The rest is the same Qur’an that states the rights of women.
Is the model of culture, not religion, in many countries that tend to legitimize the violence, especially domestic ones. against women. The creepy thing is that many times these countries are not so backward.
How is it possible that after years of struggle, the birth of movements, the proclamations of universal declarations … it seems that no great progress has been made? Unfortunately the only thing in our power to do is keep talking about cases like the one I mentioned, the word out and mobilize to catalyze the attention of those who are empowered to do something it does.
We must say enough to those who continue to close our eyes to a reality that materializes far from us: what happens outside our garden, we often end regard it as something that never happened. And this should not happen.
