TEN YEARS OF GUANTANAMO, A SAD ANNIVERSARY HOPE IS THE LAST
The January 11 marks a sad anniversary: ten years have passed since the first detainees arrived at Guantanamo, the prison dedicated to terrorists captured in Afghanistan. And ‘that day, on 11 January 2002, which began the shameful story of the American penitentiary.
How inhumane imprisonment, beatings, torture and deprivation of human rights these are the main conditions in which they are prisoners in Guantanamo, but not limited to, most of them are detained without actually being accused of a crime, without being been subjected to due process, without having had the opportunity to consult a lawyer or to meet their own family. They call them detainees, held without the title says.
Have been numerous complaints against the prison by the High Commissioner for Human Rights UN to the Red Cross all have accused the management of penitentiary methods for buried among other things used for interrogation during which prisoners were subjected to physical and psychological torture as isolation, waterboarding, isolation and sexual humiliation.
Now ten years have passed but President Barack Obama has not yet managed to keep the promise made during the election campaign or close the prison of shame, even if one of his first official acts was an executive order ordering the closure of the prison “within a year”. Now I hope this event will draw attention to the issue and that there is never more than an anniversary.
